The current population of Europe is 741,764,168 as of April 18, 2024, based on interpolation of the latest United Nations data. As of 1 July 2024, the population of Europe is projected at almost 741.7 million or 741,651,866 people. The total population in Europe is projected close to 742.3 million or 742,272,652 people in 2023. Europe is the only continent which population has peaked, with home to 746.6 million people in 2020.
Europe is the third-most continent behind Asia and Africa. Europe was the second-most populous continent until 1995 before being overtaken by Africa and projected to be surpassed by North America in 2057. Europe accounts for 9.13 percent of the world population. Its global share has been declining since 22% of 1950 and is projected to decline at 5.67 % by 2100.
Thirty-nine percent of the European population lives in Eastern Europe, 26.4 percent in Western Europe, 20.4 percent in Southern Europe, and 14.5 percent in Northern Europe.
Europe has the negative population growth rate of -0.07% for 2024, much lower than the 2nd lowest at 0.65 % of North America. Europe is the slowest growing continent since 1950 and is expected to remain until 2077 when South America has the lowest figure. The population growth reached a peak in 1958, with an annual growth rate of 1.03%. Northern Europe is the fastest-growing subregion in Europe, followed by Western Europe. Eastern Europe and Southern Europe have a negative growth rate close 0.25%. At the end of the century, All European subregions will have a declining population. Northern Europe will have more people than Southern Europe onward the year 2073.
Europe will see 552,402 less people in 2024, with Northern and Western regions adding 344,466 and 234,600 people, respectively. Eastern and Southern will have 767,167 and 364,301 people less. The net increase of the population per year peaked in 1961, with almost 6.2 million.
