GDP per capita in PPP terms, which provides a better basis for comparing living standards across countries, is 176% of the nominal figure.
Over the period since 1961, global per capita income grew by more than 4% in three years, with the highest growth rate of 5.60% recorded in 2021. Global GDP per capita contracted in five years, with the largest decline occurring in 2020, when it fell by 3.83%.
In constant 2021 prices and PPP terms, which provide a better measure of changes in living standards over time, global GDP per capita increased by 94%, from Int. $11,275 in 1990 to Int. $21,914 in 2025, based on World Bank estimates covering more than 200 economies. Nominal: The year 2021 was the best year at both current and constant prices, recording the largest increase in global GDP. 2015 and 2020 were the worst years at current and constant prices, respectively, with the largest declines.
PPP: The year 2021 was the best year for the world, with global GDP per capita increasing by Int. $1,064 at constant 2021 prices, while 2020 was the worst, with a decline of Int. $739. At current prices, 2022 and 2020 were the best and worst years, respectively.
