This year’s results found that the average level of global peacefulness deteriorated by 0.56 percent. This is the 12th deterioration in peacefulness in the last 16 years, with 65 countries improving and 97 deteriorating in peacefulness. This is the highest number of countries to deteriorate in peacefulness in a single year since the inception of the index. The conflict in Gaza and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine were the primary drivers of the fall in peacefulness.
Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. It is joined at the top of the index by Ireland, Austria, New Zealand, and Singapore. Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world. The region is home to seven of the ten most peaceful countries, and only four countries in Europe are ranked outside the top half of the index.
Yemen is the least peaceful country in the world, followed by Sudan, South Sudan, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. This is the first year that Yemen has been ranked as the least peaceful country in the world. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region remained the world’s least peaceful region.
The gap between the most and least peaceful countries in the world is now wider than it has been at any point in the last 16 years. Compared to 2008, the 25 most peaceful countries were one percent more peaceful in 2024, while the 25 least peaceful countries were 7.5 percent less peaceful.
North America recorded the largest average deterioration of all the regions, with significant falls in peacefulness in Canada and the US. However, despite this deterioration, it remains the third most peaceful region globally, behind Europe and Asia-Pacific.
El Salvador recorded the largest improvement in peacefulness on the 2024 GPI, with its score improving by 0.219. United Arab Emirates (-0.186), Nicaragua (-0.151), Greece (-0.145), and Myanmar (-0.145) are other top improvements. The top five countries with the largest deterioration in peace are Israel (+0.297), Ecuador (+0.283), Gabon (+0.203), Palestine (+0.195), and Haiti (+0.186).
The top gainers in the ranking are the United Arab Emirates (+31), El Salvador (+21), Kazakhstan (+20), Tajikistan (+18), and Angola (+18). The top losers are Sierra Leone (-23), Gabon (-18), Ecuador (-16), Senegal (-15), and France (-14).
The GPI covers 99.7% of the world’s population, using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly respected sources, and measures the state of peace using three thematic domains: the level of Societal Safety and Security; the extent of Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict; and the degree of Militarisation.
