Tamil Nadu has the 2nd largest economy among Indian states, as the GDP of the state in the year 2024-25 is estimated at ₹31.19 lakh crore. With just 4% of India’s land area and 5.46% of the country's population, Tamil Nadu contributed 8.93% to the national GDP in 2023-24. The GSDP of Tamil Nadu is 68.82% of that of the largest state, Maharashtra, and 1.05 times that of 3rd-ranked Uttar Pradesh.
Tamil Nadu has a GDP (nominal) of around 369 billion US dollars in 2024. The economy of Tamil Nadu is equivalent to that of Pakistan, the 42nd largest economy in the world. The state aims to become a $1 trillion economy by 2032-33.
Tamil Nadu's real GSDP growth rate for 2024-25 was 11.19%, the highest in India, marking its first double-digit growth in 14 years. During the period 2012-24, it has the average growth rate of 6.29%, the 12th highest in the country.
In 2024-25, Tamil Nadu’s per capita income was ₹3.62 lakh, 1.66 times the national average. Tamil Nadu ranked seventh among 34 states and union territories and 3rd in South India behind Telangana and Karnataka. The nominal GDP per capita of Tamil Nadu is estimated at 4,638 dollars in 2024; that is equivalent to that of Jordan, the 123rd richest economy in the world.
In 2024-25, the services (tertiary) sector contributed 53.60% of the state’s Gross State Value Added (GSVA), followed by the secondary sector (33.05%) and the primary sector (13.35%).
