As per the report of The Technical Group by the National Commission, The population of Maharashtra is projected to be 126,710,000 or 126.7 million or 12.67 crores as of July 1, 2023. Maharashtra is the 3rd most populous state in india. Maharashtra’s population is projected to reach 13.7 cr in 2036.
The size of the population of Maharashtra is equivalent to Ethiopia, the 11th most populous country in the world. Only one country in South America, Europe and Africa and two in North America have more people than Maharashtra.
In 2023, the sex ratio of the total population in Maharashtra is 108.408 males per 100 females. There are 65,911,000 or 65.9 million or 6.59 cr males and 60,799,000 or 60.8 million or 6.08 cr females in Maharashtra. Maharashtra has 5,112,000 or 5.11 mn more males than females.
Maharashtra accounts for 9.10 percent of the India population, that is 0.32% less than the peak level of 9.42% in 2001. Population growth rate for 2023 is projected at 0.78 % with addition of 974 k more people.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population of the state of Maharashtra was 11.2 cr, increasing from 9.69 cr in 2001. There were 58,243,056 males and 54,131,277 females, with a sex ratio of 107.596 males per 100 females. The percentage decadal growth during 2001-2011 was 15.99%, 6.74% lower than 1991-2001 period. Population of Maharashtra had increased by 15.5 million during the decade 2001-2011.
Population of Maharashtra, which at the turn of the twentieth century, was around 19.39 million increased by approx 6.53 times in a period of 122 years to reach 126.7 million at 2023.
