According to the IMF World Economic Outlook (April 2026), the European Union economy, comprising 27 economies, is projected to be around $23,035 billion in 2026, an increase of $1,803 billion from $21,235 billion in 2025. The EU currently trails the United States by approximately $9.35 trillion, while maintaining a lead of about $2.18 trillion over China. The nominal GDP of the EU aggregate surpassed the $1 trillion mark in 1973.
The European Union currently accounts for approximately 18.24% of global GDP. Its share of the world economy peaked at around 29.1% in 1979 but has declined in recent decades, reaching an all-time low of 16.5% in 2022. World Bank estimates are available from 1960, when the EU aggregate's GDP was approximately $285 billion.
Based on purchasing power parity (PPP), the European Union's GDP is forecast at $30,678 billion in international dollars in 2026, making it the third-largest economy in the world after China and the United States. The EU accounts for 13.77% of global GDP (PPP). Its GDP at purchasing power parity is 1.76 times its nominal GDP.
