List of African countries by GDP

In nominal terms, Egypt is the largest economy in Africa, followed by Nigeria and South Africa. These three together account for almost 41 % of the African economy. São Tomé and Príncipe is the smallest economy in Africa.

None of the African economies would have gdp above $500 billion, and seven would have an economy of above $100 billion. In 2023, Egypt will overtake Nigeria to become the most largest economy in Africa. Ethiopia will move up by two positions to become the 5th largest economy. None of the African economies are in the list of the top thirty largest economies in the world, and only three economies are within the top 50 world gdp ranking.

Out of 54 economies, gdp (nominal) of 40 economies would increase, and 14 economies would decrease in 2023 compared to 2022. With $35 bn, Ethiopia will be the top contributor, followed by Algeria ($29 bn) and Morocco ($16 bn). Nigeria (-$87 bn) and Egypt (-$77 bn) are the top decliners.

In ppp data, the five largest economies of Asia are Egypt, Nigeria, South Africa, Algeria and Ethiopia. Two economies would have gdp above Int. $1 trillion in 2023 and 17 would have an economy of above Int. $100 billion. Ethiopia will surpass Morocco to become the 5th largest economy in Africa. Tanzania will overtake Ghana. None of the African economies are in the list of the top ten largest economies globally, and only four economies are within the top 50 world gdp ranking.

Out of 54 economies, gdp (nominal) of 52 economies would increase, and 2 economies would decrease in 2023 compared to 2022. Egypt (Int. $134 bn), Nigeria (Int. $85 bn), and Algeria (Int. $45 bn) would be the top gainers. Sudan and Equatorial Guinea are the two decliners.
