The current population of India is 1,439,401,618 as of April 27, 2024, based on interpolation of the latest United Nations data. The population of India is projected at 1,441,719,852 or 1.44 billion or 1,441 million or 144 crores as of July 1, 2024. The total population in India is projected at 1,428,627,663 or 1.43 billion or 1,429 million or 143 crores people for the year 2023. India is the most populous country in the world overtaking China in 2023. By 2029, India will cross the 1.5 billion milestone. India’s population is projected to peak in 2064 with 1.697 bn people decrease further to 1.53 billion by 2100.
India accounts for a meagre 2.4 percent of the world surface area yet it supports and sustains a whopping 17.76 percent of the world population.Since Population of India is increasing with slower rate than the world, its global share is decreasing. By 2100, 14.78% of the earth population will be in India, that is 3.04% less than the peak level of 17.82% in 2017.
Population growth rate for 2024 is projected at 0.90 %, that is 103th highest among 237 countries/dependent territories. The population growth reached a peak in 1962 with an annual growth rate of 2.31 %. India will add 12.98 million in 2024 that is near to the population of 78th ranked Burundi. The net increase of the population per year has peaked in 2001 with almost 19.43 million.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population of India stood at 1,210,854,977. The percentage decadal growth during 2001-2011 was 17.70%, 3.84% lower than 1991-2001 period. The percentage decadal growth during 2001-2011 has registered the sharpest decline since independence. Population of India had increased by 182.1 million during the decade 2001- 2011. The increased population during the decade 2001-2011 is approximately equal to the population of Pakistan, the sixth most populous country in the world.
Population of India, which at the turn of the twentieth century, was only around 238.4 million increased by more than five times in a period of 110 years to reach 1210 million at 2011. Population of India increased by 3.35 times since independence.
