As per the report of the Technical Group by the National Commission, the population of Kerala is projected to be 36,239,000, or 36.24 million, or 3.62 crore, as of July 1, 2026. Kerala is the 15th most populous state in India and the least populous state in South India.
The size of the population of Kerala is equivalent to that of Malaysia, the 45th most populous country in the world.
In 2026, the sex ratio of the total population in Kerala will be 92.474 males per 100 females. There are 17,411,000, or 17.41 million, or 1.74 crore, males and 18,828,000, or 18.83 million, or 1.88 crore, females in Kerala. Kerala has 1,417,000, or 1.42 million, more females than males.
Kerala accounts for 2.54 percent of India's population, 1.35% less than the peak of 3.89% in 1971. The population growth rate for 2026 is projected at 0.35%, the 3rd lowest among states. Kerala will add 128k more people in 2026.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population of Kerala was 3.34 crore, increasing from 3.18 crore in 2001. There were 16,027,412 males and 17,378,649 females, with a sex ratio of 92.225 males per 100 females. The percentage decadal growth during 2001-2011 was 4.91%, almost half of that during 1991-2001. The population of Kerala increased by 1.56 million during the decade 2001-2011.
The population of Kerala, which at the turn of the twentieth century was only around 6.4 million, has grown by approximately 5.67 times in 125 years, reaching 36.24 million in 2026. In 1901, Kerala was the 13th most populous state, but as of 2026, it has overtaken Punjab and been surpassed by Telangana, Jharkhand, and Assam.
