According to the IMF World Economic Outlook (October 2025), Japan's nominal GDP in 2025 is projected at $4,280 billion, $260 billion more than the $4,019 billion in 2024. Japan's figure was highest at $6,272 billion in 2012; now it has lost almost $2 billion till 2025.
Japan is the 4th largest economy globally, trailing by $734 billion from 3rd-ranked Germany and leading by $155 billion from 5th-ranked India. As per the World Bank, Japan's rank was 6th in 1960; it overtook China, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany in the next eight years to become the 2nd largest economy in the world. China (2010) and Germany (2023) moved ahead again, leaving Japan in the current 4th spot.
In 1994, Japan's share of the world economy was 17.9%; it declined to the current estimate of 3.65% in 2025.
Japan is in 2nd position after China among Asian countries. Japan shares around 10.1% of the total of Asia's GDP (nominal).
