In 2026, Indonesia is projected to have a slightly male-skewed sex ratio of 100.93 males per 100 females, meaning males outnumber females by a narrow margin. Based on its overall female-to-male ratio, Indonesia ranks 172nd among 237 countries and territories worldwide, 28th among 51 entities in Asia, and sixth among ASEAN members. Its sex ratio is similar to those of Laos, Iraq, and the United States of America.

Indonesia has 144,610,243 (144.61 million) males and 143,276,540 (49.77 million) females in 2026, resulting in a male surplus of approximately 1.33 million. Males account for 50.23% of the population, while females make up 49.77%. Indonesia has the ninth-largest female surplus in Asia and the 11th-largest worldwide.

In Indonesia, the male-to-female ratio increased from 98.70 males per 100 females in 1950 to above parity in 1995, when males began to outnumber females. The ratio continued to rise, reaching a peak of 100.99 in 2019. Indonesia's sex ratio is projected to remain above parity through 2050.

The sex ratio at birth in Indonesia is approximately 106.1 male births per 100 female births, which is slightly above the typical biological range of around 104–106 male births per 100 female births. Historically, the ratio has remained relatively stable but at a slightly elevated level, fluctuating within a narrow range of 105.5 to 107.0 male births per 100 female births.

As of 2026, Indonesia has more males than females in age groups below 50 years. The 00–04 age group has the highest male-to-female ratio, at 105.65 males per 100 females. Among children under 15, the sex ratio stands at 105.48, while the working-age population (15–64) is also male-skewed, with 102.51 males per 100 females. However, the ratio declines sharply among those aged 65 and older, falling to 76.89 males for every 100 females. Among older adults, women substantially outnumber men, with females outnumbering males by about 2 to 1 in the 85–89 age group and by about 3 to 1 among those aged 90 and over.
