As per the report of the Technical Group by the National Commission, the population of Bihar is projected to be 131,041,000, or 131.04 million, or 13.04 crore, as of July 1, 2025. Bihar is the second-most populous state in India. Bihar’s population is projected to reach 14.91 crore in 2036.
The size of the population of Bihar is equivalent to that of Mexico, the 11th most populous country in the world. Only one country in South America and Europe and two in North America and Africa have more people than Bihar.
In 2025, the sex ratio of the total population in Bihar will be 107.955 males per 100 females. There are 68,027,000, or 68.03 million, or 6.80 crore, males and 63,014,000, or 63.01 million, or 6.30 crore, females in Bihar. Bihar has 5,013,000, or 5.01 million, more males than females.
Bihar accounts for 9.24 percent of the Indian population, the highest since 1901. The population growth rate in 2025 is projected at 1.42%, the highest among states. Bihar will add 1.84 million more people in 2025.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population of Bihar was 10.41 crore, increasing from 8.30 crore in 2001. There were 54,278,157 males and 49,821,295 females, with a sex ratio of 108.946 males per 100 females. The percentage of decadal growth during 2001–2011 was 25.42%, 3.2% lower than the 1991–2001 period. The population of Bihar increased by 21.1 million during the decade 2001–2011.
The population of Bihar, which at the turn of the twentieth century was around 21.24 million, increased by approximately 6.17 times in 124 years to reach 131.04 million in 2025.
