As per the report of the Technical Group by the National Commission, the population of Ladakh is projected to be 302,000, or 302k, or 3.02 lakh, as of July 1, 2024. Ladakh is the second-least populous UT in India and is in 35th position among 36 states and UTs. Ladakh’s population is projected to reach 3.16 lakh in 2036.
The size of the population of Ladakh is equivalent to that of New Caledonia, which ranks 186th in the world.
In 2024, the sex ratio of the total population in Ladakh will be 127.068 males per 100 females. There are 169,000, or 169k, or 1.69 lakh, males and 133,000, or 133k, or 1.33 lakh, females in Ladakh. Ladakh has 36,000, or 36k, more males than females.
Ladakh accounts for 0.02 percent of the Indian population. The population growth rate in 2024 is projected at 0.33%, the fourth lowest among all states and UTs. Ladakh will add 1,000 more people in 2024.
According to the Census of India 2011, the population of Ladakh was 2.74 lakh, increasing from 2.37 lakh in 2001. There were 156,756 males and 117,533 females, with a sex ratio of 133.372 males per 100 females. The percentage of decadal growth during 2001–2011 was 15.96%, 15.88% higher than the 1991–2001 period. The population of Ladakh increased by 38k during the decade 2001–2011.
The population of Ladakh, which at the turn of the twentieth century was around 60k, increased by approximately five times in 123 years to reach 302k in 2024. In 1901, Ladakh was in sixth-lowest place among 35 states and UTs, but as of 2024, it has been surpassed by four states and UTs: Sikkim, 'Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu', Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Chandigarh.
