According to the IMF World Economic Outlook (October 2025), Italy's nominal GDP in 2025 is projected to be around $2,544 billion, $163 billion more than the $2,381 billion in 2024. In 1990, Italy became the 6th national economy to enter the list of trillion-dollar economies.

Italy currently accounts for about 2.17 percent of the world's GDP, but its share of the global economy—after peaking at about 5.22 percent in 1991—has steadily declined, reaching an all-time low of 2.06 percent in 2022 as other large economies expanded more rapidly.

Italy is currently the eighth-largest economy in the world, trailing seventh-ranked France by approximately $818 billion while being very close to ninth-ranked Russia. Italy attained the highest rank of 5th in 1986 and has consistently remained among the world’s top ten economies throughout the modern period. Since 1993, the GDP of Italy was overtaken by the United Kingdom (1994), China (2000), and India (2015), leaving Italy in the current 8th spot. Estimates by the World Bank are available since 1960, when the country's GDP was 42 billion USD.

The service sector accounts for approximately 65.05% of Italy’s total GDP, while industry contributes around 22.33%, and agriculture makes up only about 2.00%.

Italy is the fourth-largest economy in Europe in nominal terms, accounting for around 8.58 percent of Europe’s total nominal GDP.

Based on PPP, Italy's GDP in 2025 is forecast at 3,720 billion international dollars, the 12th highest in the world, and it has remained among the top ten all the time. Italy contributes 2.17% of the entire world's GDP (PPP). The gross domestic product (GDP) of Italy at purchasing power parity (PPP) is 1.46 times the GDP at nominal.

Within Europe, Italy ranks as the fifth-largest economy by GDP (PPP), behind Russia, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, and accounts for nearly 8.49 percent of Europe’s total GDP at PPP.
