The South American economy, comprising 12 economies, in 2025 is projected to be around $4.41 trillion in nominal terms, $154 billion more than in 2024, calculated by taking figures from the IMF. This is $18 billion more than Japan's GDP, the 4th largest economy in the world. South America accounts for 3.82% of the world's GDP in nominal terms. South America ranks fourth among continents, behind Asia, North America, and Europe. South America is the 2nd smallest continental economy after Oceania in PPP methods, accounting for 4.84% of global wealth.
As per the UN, South America's share of the world economy was a maximum (5.94%) in 2011 and a minimum (2.73%) in 2003. In constant 2015 prices, which gives a better idea about expansion over the years, the South American economy has expanded from $909 billion in 1970 to $3.85 trillion in 2023, or 4.24x.
The highest increment in South American wealth was seen in 2010 when it grew by $212 billion at constant 2015 prices, while the highest reduction of $109 billion was in 2016. The figure moved downward in twelve years. At current prices, the maximum increment was in the year 2010 of $847 billion, while the biggest decline was in 2015 ($724 billion). The figure moved downward in thirteen years.
Grouping of continents and subregions is as per the United Nations Statistics Division.
