In 2026, Nigeria is projected to have a slightly male-skewed sex ratio of 102.49 males per 100 females, meaning males marginally outnumber females. Based on its overall female-to-male ratio, Nigeria ranks 196th among 237 countries and territories worldwide and 49th among 50 African entities. Nigeria's sex ratio is similar to those of Pakistan, Yemen, and Guam.

Nigeria has 122,708,307 (122.71 million) males and 119,723,524 (119.72 million) females in 2026, resulting in a male surplus of approximately 2.98 million people. Males account for 50.62% of the population, while females make up 49.38%. Nigeria has the largest absolute male surplus in Africa and ranks sixth worldwide.

In Nigeria, the male-to-female ratio declined from 99.21 males per 100 females in 1950 to a low of 97.42 in 1969. Since then, it has steadily increased, surpassing parity in 1998 as men began to outnumber women. This trend is expected to continue, with the ratio projected to reach approximately 103.25 males per 100 females by 2048.

The sex ratio at birth in Nigeria is approximately 103.8 male births for every 100 female births. Historically, the ratio has remained relatively stable, fluctuating within a narrow range from about 105.2 in 1994 to 103.6 in 2013, indicating minor variation over time.

As of 2026, Nigeria has more males than females in age groups below 55. The 15–19 age group has the highest male-to-female ratio, with 103.88 males for every 100 females. Among children under 15, the sex ratio stands at 102.97, while the working-age population (15–64) is slightly male-skewed, with 102.84 males per 100 females. However, the ratio declines sharply among those aged 65 and older, falling to 90.72 males for every 100 females. Among older adults, women substantially outnumber men: females account for nearly 65% of the population in the 94–99 age group and about 73% among centenarians.
